Gow Langsford Provide 'An Introduction' to the Paris Collection

Gow Langsford Gallery open an exhibition dedicated exclusively to providing an introduction to the Paris Family Collection this Tuesday night at their Kitchener Street Gallery.  Consisting of around fifty works from the collection, Gow Langsford's exhibition seeks to provide a broad and
non-hierarchical overview of the collection, essentially mimicking the manner in which the Paris's themselves have collected and lived with art in their Wellington home.  The exhibition will continue through until the 4th of August.  You can learn more at: http://www.gowlangsfordgallery.co.nz/exhibitions/pastexhibitions/2012/parisfamilycollection.asp. 

Churchill in the News again

The fascinating archive of Churchill material to be auctioned at A+O on the 11^th of July has generated plenty of media interest – this time in the UK publication Antiques Trade Gazette. In the July 7 edition ATG covers the story and writer Ian McKay has uncovered some additional information on the famous flight of January 1942. It seems that when the RMA Berwick on which Churchill and the warlords were travelling crossed occupied western France a Luftwaffe squadron was scrambled but thankfully failed to intercept the huge Boeing Clipper. Likewise as the Berwick approached England from the south it was thought to be a German raider and six Hurricanes from fighter command were scrambled to locate and possibly shoot down the Berwick… they too failed and the rest is history.

This is only the second time an A+O catalogue offering has made the news in the UK’s leading industry journal, the last being the superb Napoleonic collection offered in June 2010

ANOTHER GOLD!!!!!

ART+OBJECT has struck gold again, winning a Gold Medal for catalogue No. 50 featuring Yuk King Tan's Mask with Red Tassles from November last year, in the promotional print, catalogues and leaflets category at the annual Pride in Print Awards on Friday night.  As part of our acceptance speech we feel the need to be very humble and thank, in no particular order, our legendary print broker Graeme Brazier, the awesome Warren Olds from Studio Ahoy, and the ever-reliable GEON printers.  We would also like to acknowledge the artist herself, whose beautiful work was the key to one of our most successful covers.

We have today concluded the sale of Don Binney's Sunday, City Domain (1969) which featured in our April 26th catalogue Important Paintings and Contemporary Art including The Times Group Collection, for $140 000.

New Appointment

Art+Object are pleased to introduce Kate Lee.  Kate was the successful applicant for the recently advertised Receptionist position.  She is a graduate of the University of Auckland and has a B.A in Art History and Museum Studies.  Kate has recently returned from London where she worked in the Oceania Department of the British Museum.  We are delighted to welcome her into our small team. 

The Stock in Trade of David Cook Antiques

Art and Object are pleased to announce the sale of The stock in Trade of David Cook Antiques. 

David Cook  and his son Richard operated one of the most well-known antique dealerships in Auckland  from 1946-1991.Three separate shops on Shortland street  were run by  Richard and David  and during  this time they  made numerous buying  trips to the United Kingdom importing fine quality antique furniture, Asian art and ceramics. The stock has been in storage since the shop closed in 1991.

Wellington Appraisals

A+O APPOINTED TO VALUE THE NATIONAL COLLECTION

We are proud as punch to announce that we have been chosen by the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, to value their entire collection of fine art.  Te Papa's permanent collection constitutes the largest and most prestigious holding of important New Zealand paintings and art works in this country, including iconic examples by every major practitioner here and many overseas.  This  will be the first time which the collection of the Museum of New Zealand has been valued by an external party.

With the first round of auction sales now closed across New Zealand auction houses, Australian Art Sales Digest has listed the new record prices for New Zealand artist's achieved at auction.  Only figures greater than $20 000 are included in their list.  Seven new record prices were achieved across all of the auction houses, with six being acheived at A+O, three in March's sale of the Hodgson Collection and three in our April sale of Important Paintings and Contemporary Art.  You can view the full list at http://www.aasd.com.au/NewHighsCurrent.cfm (you'll need to look in the Australian list to see the sale of the Dale Frank).

THREE SIGNIFICANT VALUATION MANDATES UNDERTAKEN

We have been very busy working on three distinguished and significant public valuation mandates over the course of the last few weeks, following on from the last major art auction.  The entire fine and applied art collections of Te Manawa in Palmerston North and Christchurch Art Gallery, the latter of which comprises of around 6000 artworks and which we are completing for the second time.  We are also currently undertaking the valuation of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust which sees us travelling to sites all over New Zealand valuing the contents of our country's leading heritage places.
