The fascinating archive of Churchill material to be
auctioned at A+O on the 11th of July has generated plenty of media
interest – this time in the UK publication Antiques Trade Gazette. In the July
7 edition ATG covers the story and writer Ian McKay has uncovered some
additional information on the famous flight of January 1942. It seems that when
the RMA Berwick on which Churchill and the warlords were travelling crossed
occupied western France a Luftwaffe squadron was scrambled but thankfully
failed to intercept the huge Boeing Clipper. Likewise as the Berwick approached
England from the south it was thought to be a German raider and six Hurricanes
from fighter command were scrambled to locate and possibly shoot down the
Berwick… they too failed and the rest is history.
This is only the second time an A+O catalogue offering has
made the news in the UK’s leading industry journal, the last being the superb
Napoleonic collection offered in June 2010
