The phones have been ringing hot after A+O's million dollar art sale last night - so here is a quick sale report - more information to come in our next catalogue. The sale began with the 23 works from the Ralph Hotere Collection entitled This Land. With up to 5 phone bidders on some lots and a packed room prices were strong and 21 of the 23 works offered sold - many well over the upper estimate. Top price went to Raumati of 1968 which was one of the many stars at the viewing, fetching $36 229. Another hotly contested work was Moon Daughter, beautifully inscribed with a Hone Tuwhare poem - selling after numerous bids for $30 970 against a top estimate of $9500.
Top price for the catalogue went to Gordon Walters 1972 canvas Untitled (pictured above) selling for $273 744 with Rosalie Gascoigne's Dandelion (pictured below)from 1990 selling for the next highest price of the evening at $191 250.
Other highlights included strong price for works by Louise Henderson, Shane Cotton, Karl Maughan, A. Lois White, Stanley Palmer, Michael Illingworth & Peter Stichbury
