Thursday night's Important Paintings Sale, A+O's first for 2009, was a great success. Around $800 000 of art was sold under the hammer, with several subject sales still to be confirmed. Highlights included the major emerald green Hammond Flag selling for $256 635 under the hammer, Tony Fomison's Detail for a Dancing Skeleton making $133 450 also under the hammer, and Colin McCahon's Waterfall, being bid on the night to $239 526 before being accepted by the vendor. The overall feeling at A+O can best be described as one of general relief and now we can all look forward to the next round of sales knowing that the market is healthy and robust...
